Job Description:

Site Information:

  • Martin Luther Seminary (MLS) was founded by the two Lutheran Churches of PNG: ELC-PNG and GLC-PNG (Gutnuis Lutheran Church) in 1966 to train pastors and lay people and it also acts as a resource center for the Lutheran Church. MLS is situated on a 99.5 hectares of land along the Busu Road 3 kilometers north of Lae City. The seminary has neighboring primary schools, high schools, senior (secondary) schools, colleges and a state university.

Assignment Includes:

  • Teach the following courses: English 1: Study skills; English 2; Grammar; English 3 Reading skills; English 4: Introduction to Term paper writing;: English 5: Research skills; English 6: Public Speaking.
  • Participate in faculty meetings
  • Advise and counsel students as needed.
  • Participate actively in communal worship and life in general on the seminary campus.
  • Relate to members of the seminary community, Lae and the wider PNG community
  • Assist the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Papua New Guinea (ELC-PNG) as called upon at the seminary and outside.

All ELCA Global Personnel participate in mission interpretation.

Experience and Skills:

  • Bachelors or Masters in Education with a focus on English language, required.
  • TESOL or TEFL qualifications, preferred.
  • Some experience in teaching English in developing country context, helpful.
  • Exercise patience and humility, with the ability to tolerate challenging situations (in the PNG context) and adjust to them while finding joy in learning new things.
  • Open to talk, eager to learn the PNG culture and appreciates it as a Christian and how this impacts others.

Terms and Conditions:

  • This position is supported under the terms of a Global Mission Two-year (GM2) contract. Those provisions include: international transportation, transportation related to work assignment, pensions and major medical coverage, housing and cash salary which is adjusted according to the goods and services differential for the country of service. This position does not include provisions for dependent spouse nor children.

If Candidate is Married:

Both must complete an application for this position, even if the souse will not b fulfilling a specific role in the ministry. In the context of global mission service, a spouse is seen as a representative of the ELCA and of the receiving church regardless of their actual role. It is important for the ELCA that both members of a couple understand the role of missionary and are comfortable with that reality. In addition, an accompanying spouse receives an appointment to service by the ELCA and the support package for mission personnel includes compensation for an accompanying spouse.
