Assignment Includes:

  • The Facilitator and Educator in English as a Foreign Language will contribute to the process of strengthening the educational work and the mission of the church in Colombia and will support the growth and sustainability process of IELCO (Evangelical Lutheran Church of Colombia).
  • This position will help students in the Lutheran School, Colegio Evangelico Luteran de Columbia (CELCO), and will continue to help familiarize the language (orally and in writing) to prepare them for more demanding tasks in the subsequent stages and establish firm foundations for the development of literacy skills in English.

Specific assignments may include the following:

  • Facilitate processes of teaching English in the four main skills of listening, reading, conversation and writing
  • Interact and engage in elementary and secondary school settings
  • Plan, prepare and deliver lessons to a variety of classes and age groups.
  • Prepare and establish tests, exams and exercises.
  • Provide appropriate comments on oral and written work.
  • Design, write and produce new materials, including audio and visual resources.
  • Organize and participate in social and cultural activities
  • Attend and contribute to the training sessions.
  • Participate in marketing events for the language school.
  • Prepare information for inspection visits and other quality control exercises.
  • Perform administrative tasks
  • Interact and collaborate with local teachers and director at the school

All ELCA Global Personnel participate in mission interpretation.

Site Information:

  • This position will be based in Sogamoso, Colombia, with the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Colombia.
  • IELCO school was founded in 1955 with the aim of being a shelter for children affected by political violence and religious persecution against evangelicals, and to be cared for and guided in the academic teachings. IELCO aims to be a different educational alternative, based on ethical and Christian values allowing citizens a sense of belonging without discriminating their religious origin. Their motto has always been and will be comprehensive education, based on Christian ethical values framed in the identity of the IELCO. The elementary school ranges from 1st to 5th grade, secondary from 6th to 9th grade, and high school from 10th and 11th grade. The school has an English language program, and English is taught in all grades.

Experience and Skills:

  • B.A. in teaching is highly preferred
  • Spanish in an intermediate to advanced level, required.
  • Studies and certification in teaching English as a second language preferred.
  • A minimum of 2 years of experience in teaching ESL preferred
  • Cultural sensitivity, tolerance and intercultural patience are required.
  • Excellent planning and organization skills.
  • Creative skills and ideas for the preparation of practical and lessons.
  • Knowledge of accompaniment model in service is helpful
  • Ability to accompany students from communities in vulnerable socioeconomic and environments.
  • Leadership experience in mentoring communities and individuals
  • A flexible approach to work.

Terms and Conditions

This position is supported under the terms of a Global Mission Two-year (GM2) contract. Those provisions include: international transportation, transportation related to work assignment, pensions and major medical coverage, housing and cash salary which is adjusted according to the goods and services differential for Colombia. This position does not include provisions for dependent spouse nor children.

If Candidate is Married

Both must complete an application for this position, even if the spouse will not be fulfilling a specific role in the ministry. In the context of global mission service, a spouse is seen as a representative of the ELCA and of the receiving church regardless of their actual role. It is important for the ELCA that both members of a couple understand the role of missionary and are comfortable with that reality. In addition, an accompanying spouse receives an appointment to service by the ELCA and the support package for mission personnel includes compensation for an accompanying spouse.
