Through the Service & Justice unit, the ELCA Churchwide
Organization fosters and facilitates this church’s engagement in
service and promotes efforts to call and act for justice. It engages
in mission, service, and justice in accompaniment with churches and
organizations in other countries; serves as the means through which
churches in other countries engage in mission to this church and
society; engages with communities, coalitions and networks,
congregations, and synods in service and justice work within the
territorial jurisdiction of this church; and provides guidance to
members on matters of social justice.
This position is responsible for strengthening and enhancing the
ELCA’s relationships and engagement with Social Ministry Organizations
(SMOs) in coordination with Lutheran Services in America (LSA) and
managing the SMO affiliation process in coordination with the Office
of the Secretary. It is also responsible for management of endowment
grants under the purview of the Building Resilient Communities (BRC)
team and identifying opportunities to synergize and streamline across
other ELCA World Hunger and Lutheran Disaster Response grants. This
position will also support internal coordination within the BRC team
and fulfill the administrative roles of the team.
1. Deepen and extend the ELCA’s engagement with SMOs and serve
as a key relationship holder for programmatic engagement and liaising
with LSA in coordination of these efforts; this includes representing
Service & Justice (S&J) in various networks convened by LSA,
and identifying new opportunities for engagement in line with S&J
and BRC strategic priorities and synergies with ELCA World Hunger and
Lutheran Disaster Response programming.
2. Manage the SMO affiliation process in line with the
"Path to Affiliation" document and in coordination with the
Office of the Secretary; this includes instilling an understanding of
what relationship with the ELCA means, supporting prospective
affiliates through the process, communication with Synods/Bishops and
other stakeholders, review of all documentation, conducting regularly
scheduled reviews, ensuring SMO databases are up-to-date, as well as
providing feedback to enhance/streamline the affiliation process.
3. Serve as liaison among SMOs, LSA, and Synods to build
relationships across stakeholders, ensure effective coordination and
support, analyze common challenges, and identify new strategies for
engagement to strengthen collective impact.
4. Manage endowment grants (LSA children endowment, LSA elderly
endowment and others); this includes management of grant processes in
the ELCA GrantMaker system (application and review, award
notification, payments, reporting, etc.), providing assistance and
communication with grantees, coordinating review committees, and
overall tracking of grant documents and data; it also includes
facilitating internal financial processes for release of endowment
funds in coordination with Office of the Treasurer (OT) and
coordinating with grants managers to identify opportunities to
