Job Description:


  • La Paz, Bolivia

Assignment Includes:

  • Consolidate and formalize the curricular design and organizational design of the Betel Seminar in the Iglesia Evangélica Luterana Boliviana (IELB).
  • Organize and lead courses on Theological Education and Ministerial Formation, with emphasis on confessional identity
  • Facilitate workshops and dialogues that strengthen the church, congregations, and districts in the processes (not separated events) of theological education and ministerial formation according to the IELB curriculum.
  • Interact and cooperate with the teaching staff working on programs and processes of theological education and ministerial training, namely the secretary of education and the IELB project and management coordinator
  • Incorporate a perspective of gender justice in programs and activities as far as possible and considering the context, and an intercultural, ecumenical and interreligious perspective
  • To firmly contribute within the IELB leadership development programs
  • Recognize and interact synergistically with the theological training centers recognized in Bolivia (ISEAT), with the confessional theological training centers in Latin America (EST and SEMLA faculties), with formation programs for lay ministerial leadership (Montana Synod) and with other programs of ministerial education and theological education, related to the Lutheran communion in Latin America and the Caribbean of the LWF.
  • Facilitate and formalize possible agreements with the theological training centers in the region.
  • Facilitate applications to the system of theological education scholarships available in the region so that IELB leadership can obtain support for their studies.
  • Interpret the mission and ministry of our companions back to the ELCA through newsletters, blogs, and visits to ELCA congregations and members.

Site Information: 

IELB is the largest Spanish speaking church in the world, and the only one that is Aymara and Quechua speaking, with more than 100 self-sustainable congregations, and almost 200 hundred pastors who are enlarging the presence of the Lutheran church in Bolivian geography. In the last years, IELB is opening new missions and congregations, and the changes in the country require institutional strengthening and all levels.

Experience and Skills:

  • Masters Degree with a theological area of focus required (e.g. MDiv, MA, ThM)
  • Spanish language proficiency at intermediate level or higher is required
  • Demonstrated capacity to interact in contextual theological education and contextual ministerial formation from a strong intercultural, ecumenical and interreligious perspective
  • Ability to use Accompaniment Praxis and Diakonia as the hermeneutical key for work
  • Experience with planning, monitoring, and evaluation processes preferred
  • Ability to accompany communities with a strong ethnic identity in vulnerable socioeconomic environments

Terms and Conditions

This position is supported under the terms of ELCA Global Mission Expectations and Support for Long Term Global Personnel. Those provisions include: international transportation, transportation related to work assignment, pensions and major medical coverage, assistance with schooling for children through high school, housing and cash salary which is adjusted according to the goods and services differential for Bolivia.

If Candidate is Married

Both must complete an application for this position, even if the spouse will not be fulfilling a specific role in the ministry. In the context of global mission service, a spouse is seen as a representative of the ELCA and of the receiving church regardless of their actual role. It is important for the ELCA that both members of a couple understand the role of missionary and are comfortable with that reality. In addition, an accompanying spouse receives an appointment to service by the ELCA and the support package for mission personnel includes compensation for an accompanying spouse.
