Faculdades Escola Superior de Teologia (EST) is an important reference center for formation and research in Brazil and is one of the best reputed centers in Latin America. Its general goal is to promote academic formation and foment scientific research in the field of applied human and social sciences, linguistics, languages, arts and health. It aims at capacitating qualified professionals for work in various socio-cultural areas which demand specialized knowledge in those areas.
The history of the Faculdades EST, especially of the bachelor’s Program in Theology, is intimately related to the German immigration in southern Brazil. Since 1824 an expressive number of Confessional Lutheran Germans have arrived in the southern part of the country, beginning a work of edification of congregations. Initially, this work was done by lay people, or pastors coming from abroad. Soon, a need was felt to have theological formation on Brazilian soil, something which became reality in the year of 1946, with the foundation of the Escola de Teologia (School of Theology). Today, with a 73-year-old history, the Faculdades EST works with different levels: undergraduate, post-graduate, extension and technical programs.
The missionof Faculdades EST is to promote Teaching, Research and Extension, seeking academic excellence and contributing to the capacitation of ethical professionals who work in a way which promotes, through their professional effort, human dignity and solidarity. For this reason, it is constituted as a formation center in higher education, which, through ethics and quality teaching, promotes the transversality of the sciences and human dignity with a broad and constructive social perspective.
Since it is an institution tied to the IECLB, the Faculdades EST bases its action on the Gospel of Jesus Christ, on the commitment with the tradition of the Protestant Reformation of the 16th century and its important contribution to education, always in an ecumenical perspective. For this reason, itself, it is an institution which prioritizes the cultivation of a spirituality in which people are invited to, freely, live out the love of God in their personal, professional and social relations. These are the philosophical and educational presuppositions which tie it to the solid humanist traditions, which capacitate it to contribute to a democratic, pluralist and solidary society with all people, especially with the most vulnerable of the Brazilian society.
Today they recognize a plurality of theological approaches, which require that Theology positions itself in face of these new, sometimes difficult challenges, evaluating how they contribute to a new culture of liberation and hope. In the wake of critical theological approaches in Latin America, Theology at Faculdades EST affords an opportunity to unveil and investigate the different mechanisms that control the economy, authority, natural resources , gender and sexuality, and subjectivity and knowledge.
