Requirements for summer internship

Prospective summer interns must be at least 18 years of age and should be enrolled in an undergraduate/graduate degree program.

This is a full-time, hourly position: 40 hours/week, Monday through Friday.

If selected, interns are responsible for securing housing for the summer.

Individuals who have held internship positions with the churchwide organization in the past are not eligible.

Preferred start date is June 3, 2019. End date to be determined based on return to school date.

Position summary

This position will be part of a cohort of ELCA World Hunger interns and will require working closely with another ELCA World Hunger intern on shared projects and priorities. This will include participating in weekly cohort meetings; shared learning across all aspects of ELCA World Hunger (e.g. education, fundraising, network engagement); and collaboration on common projects.

Education of congregations and individuals is a key priority of ELCA World Hunger. Through education, we learn more about the causes of hunger and poverty and how our faith calls us to respond effectively and authentically, locally and globally. This position will assist ELCA World Hunger’s Hunger Education team with the development of resources congregations and groups can use to deepen their understanding of hunger and the ministries of the ELCA.

This position will also provide occasional support for the engagement of ELCA World Hunger’s network, which may include updating constituent information, preparing written posts for social media and supporting the planning and execution of the 2019 ELCA World Hunger Leadership Gathering.

Physical Effort.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear, use hands and fingers to operate a computer and telephone. This position requires sitting for long periods of time. Reasonable accommodations can be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

Experience and Skills:

Strong written and verbal communication skills in one-on-one and group settings;

demonstrated creativity and ability to be a self-starter; ability to manage multiple deadlines and projects; ability to work well with a team; some experience in developing and/or leading educational activities for groups; and understanding of and desire to deepen knowledge of the root causes of hunger.

Preferred areas of study: education or curriculum and/or instructional design.

Basic knowledge of the ELCA and the work of ELCA World Hunger preferred.

Willingness to travel, if necessary.
