On behalf of the ELCA, Global Mission stewards relationships with companions in every corner of the globe; funds long-term, sustainable health and development projects; responds to international disasters; listens to companion church bodies and supports companion priorities by sending global personnel and through program grants and leadership development opportunities; and receives the gifts of Christian witness from the global church to build our own capacity in the United States.

Job Purpose

This position is responsible for providing to various aspects of non-missionary related finance and administrative matters in the Global Mission Unit.

Job Responsibilities

1. Budget Maintenance

Provides assistance in the interface and maintenance of the annual current operating and World Hunger budgets for the unit and enters unit budgets into the ELCA OneSolution budgeting system.

2. Administrative Services

Facilitates the process of obtaining corporate credit cards for domestic and international staff and collaborates with OT and bank personnel regarding issues with lost or stolen cards and fraudulent card usage.

Maintains and retains budget and accounting records in accordance with ELCA retention policy and annually coordinates the storage of those records.

3. Financial Services

Prepares and executes financial transactions such as journal vouchers, wire transfer and accounts payable requests, invoices, expense reports and revenue distribution memos.

Reviews and processes contracts.

Verifies that ELCA policy and procedure requirements are met, interpreting the same to unit staff.

4. General Ledger Maintenance

Reconciles and prepares monthly financial reports on all Org keys and Objects

Reviews detailed program expenditure reports for accuracy on a quarterly basis and prepares adjusting entries as needed.

Distributes standard, monthly/quarterly financial reports to staff

5. Cost Center Maintenance

Maintains the Unit organization and job key (cost center) structure in collaboration with the other Finance and Administrative Services team members.

6. Performs other duties as required.

Travel.

Work-related travel is not a normal part of this position except for participation in summers events (e.g. Summer Missionary Conference) as requested and staff retreats.

Physical Effort.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear, use hands and fingers to operate a computer and telephone. This position requires sitting for long periods of time. Reasonable accommodations can be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions

Experience and Skills:

  1. Bachelor’s degree in accounting preferred or commensurate experience in a non-profit setting, with global environmental experience desired.
  2. Detail-oriented and good aptitude in reconciling financial information.
  3. Working experience with computer operating systems and software applications including Excel and Word.
  4. Ability to meet deadlines, work under pressure, and preserve confidentiality, and work and communicate effectively with all levels of management.
  5. Proven knowledge of the generally accepted accounting principles for non-profit organizations, budgeting practices, audit schedules and financial reporting requirements.
