Job Description:


  • Bratislava, Slovakia

Assignment Includes:

Serving as pastor of Bratislava International Church

  • Hold English-language worship services and provide appropriate congregational ministries for the international and expatriate community, university and seminary, and the Evangelical Lyceum
  • Be available for pastoral care for those in the various groups who desire it
  • Establish pastoral relationships with ELCA and other volunteers as appropriate
  • Attend to the development of administrative and organizational needs of an international, often transient congregation
  • Build and sustain a respectful working relationship with the Evangelical Church of the Augsburg Confession (the Slovak Lutheran Church)
  • Interpret Global Mission ministry and mission opportunities to companion church
  • Provide supervision to an ELCA Horizon International Intern
  • Interpret the mission and ministry of companions back to the ELCA through newsletters, blogs, and visits to ELCA congregations and members

Providing shared leadership of the Central Europe Teachers Program

  • Provide regular pastoral support to volunteers in the Central Europe Teachers (CET) Program located in Bratislava and other Slovak communities, as well as Poland and Hungary, including providing worship leadership at gatherings and being available to participate in chapel at teaching sites
  • Along with the Director and Coordinator of the CET, handle arrangements for gatherings of the CET volunteers and visits to teaching sites
  • Receive, manage and report on funds used for the CET program

Fulfilling teaching and leadership responsibilities at Evangelical Lyceum in Bratislava

  • Teach high school students as part of the religion department at the Lyceum and participate in student and academic life (expected load to be a 2-hour religion seminar for 5th year students held on the same day as chapel)
  • With the cooperation of the Lyceum chaplain, lead English-language student chapel services held bi-weekly during the school year

Mission Purpose:

Bratislava International Church is key to the ELCA program of accompaniment in Central Eastern Europe. The continued renewal of the Lutheran church in Slovakia is very important for the future of Lutheranism in the region. The Evangelical Church of the Augsburg Confession of the Slovak Republic is one of the largest churches in the region.

  • Through the Evangelical Lyceum in Bratislava and the other schools in Slovakia, our companion church helps shape the future leadership of Slovakia and Central Eastern Europe church and society. The theological faculty in Bratislava serves seminary students from several countries in the region and thereby extends the reach of a strong Lutheran witness supported by viable English-language Lutheran ministry.
  • Volunteers in the ELCA Central Europe Teachers Program, members of the congregation, the Lyceum students and staff, and the community receive spiritual nurture and support through the pastor sent by the ELCA.

  • Paid musician who assists with worship leadership

Experience and Skills:

  • On the ELCA Roster of Ministers of Word and Sacrament
  • Previous international work experience helpful
  • Previous Experience supervising interns helpful
  • Adaptable and flexible in different cultures
  • Teaching ability and/or experience with high school students desirable
  • Proficiency in English with effective verbal, written and listening skills
  • Ability to walk distances on uneven surfaces, manage stairs
  • Skills in financial management

Terms and Conditions

This position is supported under the terms of ELCA Global Mission Expectations and Support for Long Term Global Personnel. Those provisions include: international transportation, transportation related to work assignment, pensions and major medical coverage, assistance with schooling for children through high school, housing and cash salary which is adjusted according to the goods and services differential for Slovakia.

If Candidate is Married

Both must complete an application for this position, even if the spouse will not be fulfilling a specific role in the ministry. In the context of global mission service, a spouse is seen as a representative of the ELCA and of the receiving church regardless of their actual role. It is important for the ELCA that both members of a couple understand the role of missionary and are comfortable with that reality. In addition, an accompanying spouse receives an appointment to service by the ELCA and the support package for mission personnel includes compensation for an accompanying spouse.
