Job Context Information

The Mission Advancement unit is responsible for communicating with constituents and donors, handling marketing and public relations, and directing our current, deferred and major fund appeals in order to most effectively communicate around a clear identity and mission, while also motivating donors to respond with financial gifts.The work of the Mission Funding team includes: Global Church Sponsorship; ELCA World Hunger and Disaster Appeals; ELCA Fund for Leaders; Domestic Mission Advancement; and Mission Support.

As an overall goal, the Global Church Sponsorship team seeks to realize its financial goals within the churchwide operations plan and the Campaign for the ELCA. The strategic means to achieve these goals are to (1) grow existing ministries and scale their impact, (2) offer new giving opportunities to a greater number of ELCA members, (3) strengthen its relationships with congregations sponsoring missionaries and supporting global mission, (4) build a sustainable major donor portfolio in support of ELCA global mission.

Job Purpose

To secure gift revenue in support of ELCA priority fundraising objective: ELCA Global Church Sponsorship, (Young Adults in Global Mission, Missionaries, International Women Leaders, Global Ministries,) ELCA World Hunger, ELCA Fund for Leaders, Domestic Mission. This position is responsible for identifying, cultivating and soliciting individuals with capacity for leadership and major gifts to the ministries of the ELCA and will maintain a portfolio of major donor prospects. This position works closely with all members of the Mission Advancement staff, including Strategic Communications, Constituent Support, Mission Funding Programs and the ELCA Foundation and with other churchwide units (especially Global Mission,) in planning strategies, soliciting donors, reporting impact and celebrating results. As ELCA Global Church Sponsorship is part of Always Being Made New: The Campaign for the ELCA, this position will also work closely with Campaign staff and be expected to represent Campaign ministries from time to time. This position may require public speaking at congregations, synods, conferences, etc.

Job Responsibilities

1. Carry out personal portfolio assignments with specific major gift prospects. Meet with major gift individual donors, prospects, and volunteers; at least 15 in-person visits per month; travel as necessary.

2. Manage the moves management process and tracking of portfolio with donor database software; conduct effective and appropriate reporting, note taking and stewardship.

3. Assist the Mission Funding team with major gift strategies.

4. Other duties as assigned.


Frequent travel is required (up to 50%) to meet with donors, synods and congregations. Frequent travel over evenings and weekends. Possibility of position being "deployed."

Physical Effort.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear, use hands and fingers to operate a computer and telephone. Experience and Skills:

1. Bachelor’s degree

2. Proven relationship-building skills and the ability to interact effectively with diverse constituencies. Ability to develop collaborative relationships across various departments, units and

expressions of the church.

3. Excellent interpersonal skills: the ability to work collegially and collaboratively with a diverse population both inside and outside of the Churchwide Organization and to communicate effectively both verbally and in written form.

4. Ability to work independently, strong attention to detail and deadlines, and ability to manage multiple projects.

5. Experience in capital campaigns, gift development, donor stewardship, and moves management.

6. Demonstrated ability to adhere to professional standards and maintain confidentiality.

7. Demonstrated success in achieving fundraising goals.

8. Demonstrated understanding of and commitment to Christian stewardship

9. Computer skills in Word, Excel, Outlook, including basic design and layout; previous experience using donor database a plus.

10. A sense of humor and ability to work well on a team.
