Job Description:

Job Context

Assist the Treasurer and Executive for Administration in the development and management of the churchwide organization budgets. This includes income and expense analysis. Supervise and direct activities of staff servicing the units of this church in their budgeting and accounting responsibilities.

Responsibilities:

1.Supervise staff of four (three budget and accounting analysts, one budget and accounting assistant) who service units/offices in their budgeting and accounting requirements. Facilitate collaboration between the Office of the Treasurer and finance personnel within units and separately incorporated ministries of the ELCA.

2. Lead the annual organizational budget process for current operating funds, World Hunger funds, certain designated funds and capital projects. Estimate, review and recommend changes in income projections and estimates for certain expense categories. Facilitate detailed budget creation for the Office of the Treasurer and assist the Office of the Presiding Bishop in developing expense budgets and proper allocation of resources.

3. Regularly monitor the organization’s performance to budget and communicate items of concern to the Treasurer and Executive for Administration. Quarterly, facilitate budget reviews for all CWO units and offices.

4. Monitor synod mission support plans, receipts, and reporting. This includes communication with synods, as needed.

5. Coordinate agendas and financial documents required for governance (e.g. Church Council Budget and Finance Committee, Churchwide Assembly) and internal oversight (e.g. Capital Budget Committee) meetings.

6. Serve as a member of the OT Leadership Team. Represent the Office of the Treasurer as a member of inter-unit committees and groups.

7. Performs other duties as required

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly to talk and hear, stretch and reach, use the hands and fingers to operate a computer, telephone, keyboard, calculator, fax and copying machines. This position requires sitting for long periods of time. Employee will occasionally expect to lift boxes of approximately 20 pounds. Experience and Skills:

1. College Degree in accounting or finance

2. 5-7 years related working experience with knowledge of the church and at least 2 years supervisory experience.

3. Proficiency with budgeting philosophies and practices

4. Good understanding of (and ability to apply) not-for-profit accounting principles; knowledge of accounting systems

5. Ability to successfully supervise and motivate staff; ability to work collaboratively with others

6. Strong communication skills, both oral and written

7. Knowledge of the church

Education and training

Bachelor’s degree with major in accounting or business management or related field; 5 years of related work experience
