Job Description:

Location:

  • La Ceiba, Honduras

Assignment Includes:

Plan & implement leadership development activities in the Atlantic Coast region of the Iglesia Cristiana Luterana de Honduras (ICLH), including the following:

  • Preparation of lay leaders in key areas such as liturgy, preaching, administration of the sacraments, Christian education for different age groups, etc.
  • Training of new & existing church leaders in Biblical understanding & interpretation
  • Strengthening of Lutheran identity in all formational activities
  • Pastoral accompaniment for ICLH mission points in the Atlantic Coast region
  • Assist with key communications between the ICLH and ELCA companion synods (translations)
  • Other mutually agreed-upon activities between missionary & direct supervisor
  • Interpret the mission and ministry of companions back to the ELCA through newsletters, blogs, and visits to ELCA congregations and members.

Site Information:

  • Missionary will be expected to live in/near La Ceiba which is located on the Atlantic Coast of Honduras & the closest major population center to a group of 4 ICLH mission points located in this part of the country.
  • The ICLH is a small, but active church composed of 12 faith communities: half are larger, more established congregations and half are mission points. All are in urban marginalized communities or poor rural areas. Each faith community is led by a pastoral team, composed of volunteer lay leaders who assume many of the roles reserved for a full-time pastor in more traditional church settings - presiding at worship, preaching, teaching, visitation, counseling, etc.
  • For more than a decade, the ICLH has been undergoing a period of fundamental self-reflection & redevelopment, led principally by the church’s lay leaders. This process has focused on more effective development of leadership for a church of the poor and a more diversified ministry model (with active lay participation) that is contextually appropriate and financially sustainable.
  • The current ICLH pastor president (Rev. Rolando Ortez) was elected in the spring of 2016. Under his leadership, ICLH has increased the number of pastors - via a non-traditional candidacy process. In June 2017, ICLH ordained seven new pastors, four women and three men - all with 10+ years of experience as active members of pastoral teams. All come from ICLH faith communities located in poor neighborhoods, often occupied by youth gangs. As a body, they are highly experienced and uniquely qualified to provide pastoral leadership and accompaniment to people living in some of Honduras’ poorest and most vulnerable communities; yet they are participating in an ongoing process of Biblical-theological formation with a Lutheran perspective to compensate for the lack of formal Biblical-theological education in a university/seminary setting.

Experience and Skills:

  • Prior experience in lay leadership development in a Lutheran church setting is required
  • Conversational and writing proficiency in Spanish is required (applicants that are not sufficiently proficient to the level requested will still be considered)
  • M.Div. or comparable master's level program in theology is preferred
  • Prior work experience in Hispanic congregations of the ELCA and/or with the Latino population in general is preferred
  • Musical abilities such as playing the guitar or a good singing voice is helpful

If Candidate is Married

Both must complete an application for this position, even if the spouse will not be fulfilling a specific role in the ministry. In the context of global mission service, a spouse is seen as a representative of the ELCA and of the receiving church regardless of their actual role. It is important for the ELCA that both members of a couple understand the role of missionary and are comfortable with that reality. In addition, an accompanying spouse receives an appointment to service by the ELCA and the support package for mission personnel includes compensation for an accompanying spouse.
