Assignment Includes:

The Country Coordinator oversees and facilitates the Young Adults in Global Mission (YAGM) program and has overall responsibility for the YAGM volunteers’ well-being, support, and guidance during their term of service, and thus plays both a pastoral and administrative role. The Country Coordinator, in consultation with staff of the ELCA Global Mission unit (ELCA/GM), has the primary role in making decisions about a volunteer’s placement, term of service, planning and implementing in-country orientation and retreats, facilitating conflict resolution and responding to crisis and emergency situations. The Country Coordinator also facilitates in-country logistics for YAGM volunteers such as visa procedures, finances and stipends, housing, working out individual placements, arrivals and departures, and evaluations of YAGM volunteers.

  • Determine placement/work sites appropriate for each volunteer
  • Participate in the discernment process for applicants and assign candidates to specific placements
  • Train and build the capacity of local supervisors in the placement sites
  • Find appropriate housing for the young adults
  • Provide orientation to the young adults at their arrival
  • Mentor young adults in their spiritual life through Bible study and spiritual growth opportunities
  • Prepare and direct retreats and conferences throughout the year
  • Make site visits to the volunteers’ placements for conversation with the volunteers and their supervisors
  • Administer the finances of the YAGM program; prepare annual budgets
  • Attend to issues as they arise related to the program and work with Global Mission staff to seek resolution
  • Support the goals of the YAGM program through the implementation of its program components
  • Serve as main liaison between ELCA synods and churches and the Iglesia Evangelica Luterana Unida (IELU)
  • Accompany ELCA delegations that visit IELU
  • Interpret the mission and ministry of our companions back to the ELCA through newsletters, blogs, and visits to ELCA congregations and members.

 

Site Information:

Experience and Skills:

  • Minimum B.A. plus 3 years of relevant experience required; theological training at the Masters level (M.Div, M.A., etc.) or above, strongly preferred.
  • Open to clergy or lay; first call candidates are welcome to apply
  • 3-5 years’ experience in international service, preferred.
  • Experience working with young adults, preferred.
  • Group leadership skills, including mentoring young adults in spiritual life.
  • Strong writing and communication skills
  • Strong organizational and personnel management skills; experience with budget management and project planning
  • Cross-cultural sensitivity and personal resiliency
  • Ability to work collaboratively with ELCA/GM staff, Iglesia Evagelica Luterana Unida church leadership and nongovernmental organizations
  • Computer skills, including MS Word, PowerPoint and e-mail
  • Previous experience with the YAGM program, helpful

Terms and Conditions

This position is supported under the terms of ELCA Global Mission Expectations and Support for Long Term Global Personnel. Those provisions include: international transportation, transportation related to work assignment, pensions and major medical coverage, assistance with schooling for children from kindergarten through high school, housing and cash salary which is adjusted according to the goods and services differential for Argentina

If Candidate is Married

Both must complete an application for this position, even if the spouse will not be fulfilling a specific role in the ministry. In the context of global mission service, a spouse is seen as a representative of the ELCA and of the receiving church regardless of their actual role. It is important for the ELCA that both members of a couple understand the role of missionary and are comfortable with that reality. In addition, an accompanying spouse receives an appointment to service by the ELCA and the support package for mission personnel includes compensation for an accompanying spouse.
