Job Description:

Location:

  • La Ceiba, Honduras

Assignment Includes:

Plan & implement all necessary activities for the formation of church leaders in the Atlantic Coast region of the Lutheran Christian Church in Honduras (ICLH), including the following:

  • Preparation of lay leaders in key areas such as liturgy, preaching, administration of the sacraments, Christian education for different age groups, etc.
  • Training of existing & future church leaders in Biblical understanding & interpretation
  • Strengthening of Lutheran identity in all formational activities
  • Pastoral accompaniment to all ICLH mission points located in the Atlantic Coast region
  • Assist with important communications between the ICLH and key ELCA actors such as companion synods (translations)
  • Other activities as assigned by the missionary’s supervisor, after a process of mutual dialogue and consensus.
  • Interpret the mission and ministry of our companions back to the ELCA through newsletters, blogs, and visits to ELCA congregations and members.

Site Information:

  • The Christian Lutheran Church in Honduras is a small church with 10 congregations scattered all around the country. It has been divided in three sub-regions one of which the Northern Atlantic region where La Ceiba is located. This is a Caribbean region with very warm climate. It is also the area of the country where indigenous and Afro-descendants are more prominent.

Experience and Skills:

  • Theological Education - M.Div. or a similar degree (required)
  • Pastoral Experience in the ELCA (required)
  • Spanish language proficiency (required)
  • Experience with Latino Ministries or at least exposure (preferred)

 

Terms and Conditions

This position is supported under the terms of ELCA Global Mission Expectations and Support for Long Term Global Personnel. Those provisions include: international transportation, transportation related to work assignment, pensions and major medical coverage, assistance with schooling for children through high school, housing and cash salary which is adjusted according to the goods and services differential for Honduras.

If Candidate is Married

Both must complete an application for this position, even if the spouse will not be fulfilling a specific role in the ministry. In the context of global mission service, a spouse is seen as a representative of the ELCA and of the receiving church regardless of their actual role. It is important for the ELCA that both members of a couple understand the role of missionary and are comfortable with that reality. In addition, an accompanying spouse receives an appointment to service by the ELCA and the support package for mission personnel includes compensation for an accompanying spouse.
