Job Description:

Position Closes on: December 31, 2017

Location:

  • Hong Kong with possibilities in Malaysia
  • Work areas are China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Malaysia and Singapore; and beyond as assigned

Assignment Includes:

  • Steward ELCA’s relationships with companion churches and partners in Chinese language areas of Asia.
  • Extend theological education engagements of the ELCA in the identified region, providing for relationships with ELCA theological education networks, networking within Asia, and consulting on theological education matters; in consultation with the Regional Representative for Theological Education and Church Relations
  • Serve as consultant on theological education, as requested by companions.
  • Attend to Planning, Monitoring and Evaluation (PME) processes for ELCA-funded projects in the countries identified.
  • Attend partner fora, roundtables, and other consultative gatherings that relate to the churches and institutions in the identified region.
  • Assist in planning and implementing consultations and fora that involve ELCA emphases and interests.
  • Interpret the mission and ministry of our companions back to the ELCA through newsletters, blogs, and visits to ELCA congregations and members.

Site Information:

  • China - Three Self Patriotic Church / China Christian Council, both at the national level (head office in Shanghai) and regional and local levels (Sichuan, Yunnan, Guangxi). The ELCA has been working with the church in China for more than 15 years, encompassing ministry in Sichuan, Yunnan and Guangxi provinces. This includes leadership training, theological education, health care, social ministry, rural development and evangelism. The ELCA also provides a grant to for the work of an autism center in Qingdao.
  • Taiwan - Taiwan Lutheran Church was birthed out of mission efforts from the United States in the late 1940s. The TLC has maintained strength in evangelism, youth and campus ministry, and health ministries. On the latter, Chiayi Christian Hospital is one of the premier hospitals in mid-Taiwan.
  • Hong Kong - The Evangelical Lutheran Church of Hong Kong’s strengths lie in urban ministry among its more than 50 congregations, education (11 primary and secondary schools), social ministry and church publishing. Its seminary has become a regional center for theological education, including outreach to mainland China and the Mekong region.
  • Malaysia - The Lutheran Church in Malaysia dates back to 1953 with early missionary work from the United States. Constituted in 1963, the church’s growth was primarily among the ethnic Chinese population of West Malaysia. But soon the LCM began outreach among the Orang Asli, the indigenous peoples of West Malaysia. The LCM now also engages in global mission in Myanmar, China and Vietnam.
    The Basel Christian Church of Malaysia is located in Sabah (east Malaysia) and has roots in the Basel Mission’s work in southern China. While the church has long been a Hakka Chinese speaking church, ministry has grown to include ministry among the indigenous peoples of Sabah as the fastest growing group within the BCCM, and growing a English-speaking as well as Mandarin-speaking segment.
  • Singapore - What had initially been the Lutheran Church in Malaysia and Singapore, the church divided in 1997 into a Malaysian church (see above) and that within Singapore. There are five congregations in the LCS and a Thai outreach center. The social services ministry of the LCS are strong, together with an active maritime ministry. The LCS has global outreach to Cambodia, China and Mongolia.

Experience and Skills:

  • M.DIV and/or other theological degrees preferred.
  • Certification and experience in other fields, such as development helpful.
  • Chinese language (especially Mandarin) capability required.

Terms and Conditions

This position is supported under the terms of ELCA Global Mission Expectations and Support for Long Term Global Personnel. Those provisions include: international transportation, transportation related to work assignment, pensions and major medical coverage, assistance with schooling for children from kindergarten through high school, housing and cash salary which is adjusted according to the goods and services differential for country of service.

If Candidate is Married

Both must complete an application for this position, even if the spouse will not be fulfilling a specific role in the ministry. In the context of global mission service, a spouse is seen as a representative of the ELCA and of the receiving church regardless of their actual role. It is important for the ELCA that both members of a couple understand the role of missionary and are comfortable with that reality. In addition, an accompanying spouse receives an appointment to service by the ELCA and the support package for mission personnel includes compensation for an accompanying spouse.
